Pet health insurance

Pet health insurance works in a similar manner to human health insurance policies, in that they both include annual premiums, deductibles, co-pays and caps.

Health insurance is available for all types of pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, exotic birds, reptiles, potbelly pigs and various rodents.

Cost of coverage is based typically on the animal’s age, health profile and the level of care you choose. Generally, older animals cost more to cover—and some companies have age limits. Also there may be exclusions for pre-existing conditions, and some insurers may not cover certain breeds that are prone to hereditary conditions (e.g. hip dysplasia).

The Best Pet Insurance

The Best Pet Insurance

pet insurance
The best pet insurance offers coverage that’s broad enough for whatever healthcare your dog or cat needs — with high enough limits to cushion you in a worst-case scenario. We consulted with vets and pet care experts on what’s essential (and what’s simply a nice-to-have). Then we dug into the policy details, analyzed coverage, and put each provider’s customer service to the test.

How We Chose the Best Pet Insurance
To start, we combed the web for all insurers that sell individual pet policies in all 50 states. We wanted to compare only actual insurance, so veterinary discount plans like Pet Assure or financial relief programs like Red Rover were off the list. That left us with 12 companies that offer accident and illness coverage for dogs and cats.

Comprehensive medical coverage

You want your pet’s plan to guard against the full range of costly medical issues that could occur over the course of his or her life. This means that in addition to accident and injury protection, you want continual coverage for cancer and other chronic illnesses, as well as hereditary or congenital conditions (such as cherry eye or liver shunts). The “continual” part is key here, Without it, your coverage could disappear when the policy year rolls over, even if your pet still requires care.

Coverage based on actual vet bills

All pet insurance works on a reimbursement model: You pay the vet bills yourself and then get reimbursed for covered services. Reimbursement should be based on your total vet bill, rather than on a benefit schedule or “usual and customary” charges.

The problem with benefit schedules is that they set a maximum payout for the diagnosis your pet receives. So if the actual treatment costs more, you’ll have to pay the difference out of your own pocket. “Usual and customary” reimbursement is slightly better, but it also caps payments (at amounts deemed typical for the treatment in your geographic region).

Both models are risky if your pet’s care costs end up being higher than normal, which is why we’re only recommending providers that base their reimbursement on the amount paid to the vet.

No limit for specific conditions

Additionally, a good plan should not place a limit on how much it will pay for specific conditions or incidents. Some plans have an annual maximum for covered expenses (say $10,000). Because you can’t predict what will happen to your pet, you want that full amount to be available for whatever comes up.

For example, if your cat swallows a string and needs surgery to remove it, you don’t want to find out that only 20 percent of your $10,000 benefit is eligible to pay for it. Similarly, if your puppy develops cancer, you don’t want to learn that your policy only reimburses up to $3,000/year for cancer treatments.

Prescription drug coverage

For pet owners, prescription medication is not a matter of if, but when. Pet Health and Safety Coach Arden Moore says that prescription drug coverage is vital: “Many conditions require continual medication, which can quickly get expensive without this provision.” Even small things, like a $30 bottle of ointment to treat ear infection (a recurring problem for many dog breeds), can add up over time.

To be clear, this coverage is not for preventative medications (like flea treatments), but it covers anything your vet prescribes. This makes it easy to buy prescribed medication directly from your vet, without having to worry about cost.

DIGESTIVE ENZYMES AND PET HEALTH

Digestive enzymes are produced by the pancreas to normalize proper digestion of nutrients for you and your pet.

Many times these enzymes are not present due to a genetic defect occurring at birth or due to illness of the pancreas that reduces the production of a digestive enzyme called trypsin. This deficiency is mainly seen in dogs.

This will lead to malabsorption of nutrients and can lead to multiple problems caused by a lack of regulatory hormones from the endocrine glands that lead to a deregulated immune system.

How can you tell if this enzyme deficiency is occurring in your dog?

Did you ever wonder why your pet will eat its own stool or the stool of others?

The answer is fairly simple. If there is not enough digestive enzymes being produced by the pancreas, the normal amount of ingested food is not going to be completely broken down, allowing undigested food to end up in the stool. The dog will realize that there is food in the stool, and eat it. If the dog eats their own stool, they have the digestive enzyme deficiency. If the dog eats another animals stool, that animal has the digestive enzyme deficiency.

Most dogs will eat cat feces, not necessarily because the cats may have a digestive enzyme deficiency but rather from the fact, that the protein content is too high in cat foods, and the cats cannot digest some of the high protein, which will end up in their stool. This is why dogs enjoy eating cat stool.

Remember, if your dog has food sensitivities, and eats cat stool, the undigested food may be allergenic for your dog. It obviously is a very unpleasant “pastime” but could be very detrimental to a food sensitive dog. It also makes some of us wonder, if we eat too much at meal time, or feed our pet too much at meal time, will the normal amount of digestive enzyme be superseded by the quantity of food ingested?

The high protein content of cat food in the stool will cause the dogs to ingest almost any cat stool.

Over the years, the usual recommendations included food additives that become bitter in the stool, or to actually add horrible condiments on to the stool while it is lies on the ground.

It would be much better to add a plant based, digestive enzyme to each meal, to help with total breakdown and absorption of the nutrients.

If you have more than one dog, by adding vegetable dye to the food, and feeding separately, you will be able to determine who is doing what!

There are definitely other signs of an enzyme deficiency. Some of these signs are reduced growth. Often you may see an animal that has bowed wrists and is cow hocked, due to the lack of digestive enzymes, which allows for a “sludging affect” to occur with the fatty acids. This “sludging affect”, not only ties up the fat soluble vitamins, but also stops calcium absorption. This lack of calcium uptake, may lead to slack ligamentation and the clinical signs you are seeing.

Weight loss or lack of weight gain, plus voluminous stools, are further indications of this deficiency. For more information on this problem, you may want to check the Published Works page or consult with me.

AN OVERVEIW OF TODAYS SECRET TO MAINTANING GOOD HEALTH IN AN AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT

Good health in this day and age comes from a balance of active cortisol and active estrogen and their effect on not only the pituitary, thyroid glands but also on the immune system.

If there is a change in this ratio between active cortisol and active estrogen, then serious diseases may follow.

It is a misnomer to say, since this ratio change has occurred; now the immune system is deficient. This is really wrong. The immune cells are now DEREGULATED. Both the B and T cells have not only lost their protective function for the body due to the cortisol- estrogen imbalance, but now have lost recognition of the bodies own tissue. These cells may now react to self tissue. The disease is referred to as AUTO-IMMUNITY.

All cancer patients, whether animal or human, have this ratio imbalance between active cortisol and active estrogen. The only true immune-deficiency comes from the B cell reducing its production of antibody. When the antibody level in people and animals drops below 60 mg %, then malabsorption occurs with oral supplements. This is often why a patient in the hospital does well on intravenous and intra muscular medications because they bypass the gut. When the patient is sent home on the same oral medication, the patients does not do well. Often they may be told that we will prescribe a different medication.

What is the point, if you cannot absorb ALL medical patients, whether people or animals need an IgA test done with the other routine blood tests? This may be a reason why nutraceuticals, holistic and homeopathic supplements have not worked. Ask your healthcare specialist for you and your pet to consider this.

The fact that you or your animal are told that your impirical values are normal, does not mean those values are active. These hormone levels need to relate to the proper management of the immune cells and system.

The world needs to realize that the endocrine system regulates the immune system.

Now if we look at our environment, you may be able to understand those toxins and contaminants can alter the active cortisol and active estrogen ratio and allow for a deregulation and antibody deficiency of the immune system and either allow some unhappy diseases to occur or can actually allow the immune system to attack the body itself by being deregulated.

If you consider this ratio, than you can understand how your environment can hurt this important ratio.

What will affect the level of active cortisol? Obviously stress will burn up active cortisol and various toxins and heavy metals can damage the middle layer of the adrenal cortex, where cortisol is produced. Accidents, aging, anesthetics and any invasive procedure or bodily insult can lower your active cortisol and change the ratio causing major disease. Do you realize that you and your animal must produce 30 to 35 units daily of active cortisol for everyone to maintain good health?

What about the active estrogen within this ratio? In menstruating females, part of their active estrogen comes from the ovaries and part comes from the inner layer adrenal cortex.

To distinguish between the two, the human female would have a total estrogen done on the 7th day of her cycle, and on the 26th day of her cycle or when her healthcare professional feels her estrogen production is the least and then the most from the ovaries. The difference is adrenal estrogen however there are other ingested forms of estrogen that may offset the ratio.

My website has an article on foods that contain natural estrogens. Depending on your ratio, foods containing estrogen may either help you or hurt you or make no difference. These are often referred to as phyto-estrogens. Plastics may contain xeno-estrogens. What about birth control pills plus estrogenic compounds used in menopause? Check the ratio. Determine if these extra sources of estrogen are really necessary, and if they are, check your IgA to see if you can even absorb them.

HIV and AIDS

By Alfred J. Plechner, D.V.M.

This HIV virus is very similar to the FIV virus in that it appears that both viruses effect patients in a similar manner. This can be overcome in 70 % of cases involving cats and it may also apply to patients with aids.

It has been proven that a certain immune cell is responsible for protecting the body against viruses and fungi. This cell is called a T cell which is programmed through the thymus.

What might deregulate this T cell function?

A cortisol deficiency or defective cortisol will allow the T cell to be deregulated due to the pituitary gland stimulating excess amounts of adrenal estrogen, therefore it will not be able to carry out its protective function for the body, which is antivirus and antifungal.

This may be why an HIV virus, with a deregulated T cell, will allow this virus to develop into AIDS. If there is only a partial deregulation of the T cell, often AIDS will not develop.

A blood test, that I have discovered, will reveal this and also help to design a treatment program to control the disease.

There may never be a “quick fix”, however identifying and replacing this hormone imbalance, so that the T cell can carry out its function, does work once. This mechanism or imbalance has been found, the replacement therapy to again have T cell work again to protect the patient is simple. Please check the web under the Human Protocol.

HIV to AIDS Disease model revised

“To stop HIV progression to AIDS, we needed to find a way to suppress and control the inflammatory cytokines that drive the TH2 arm of the immune system. The inflammatory cytokines we know about today are NF-Kappa B, TNF-a and IL-6 but there could be more that will be discovered in due time. It was not only Alfred Plechner, DVM, whose 30 plus years of treating over 35,000 dogs, cats and other pets with prednisolone and thyroid that finally opened our eyes to scrapping the disease model of the past 25 years that HIV is pathogenic and directly causes immune deficiency but also the research in Germany of Albrecht Ulmer et al in a controlled study that demonstrated that even a low dose of just 5 mg daily of prednisolone could single handedly keep the CD4 counts high and AIDS at bay over a 2 year period.”

What is Canine / Feline Flu part 2

What is Canine / Feline Flu?
Flu viruses and flu vaccines meant to stop the advancement of the flu are really questionable in my own opinion.

These viruses are very fragile and subject to major environmental changes that cannot be protected with the old vaccine.

First of all, what you need to determine is, “is this virus terminal or not. How sick do you need to become to risk a reaction from the vaccine ahead of time?

I do not think you do. This is my opinion after recognizing and treating flu viruses in dogs and cats without a single fatality.

What are the signs of flu in your dog or cat?

They can vary from feeling bad to vomiting and diarrhea, or increased lung sounds with chronic coughing.

Often the temperature will be elevated over 102.5. If the temperature is below 100.5, this may indicate that a virus is present but the immune cells have not quite realized the problem. Generally, antibiotics and steroids will treat the problem in 5 to 7 days.

The virus appears to be only 30 % contageous.

Recently a more severe form of flu virus has appeared in dogs in the eastern United States. We have been told that this flu virus is occurring in epidemic proportions. There are new vaccines that have been made to protect dogs from this form of virus that are being recommended by the veterinarians dealing with this problem. So far, I am not aware of this virus invading our area, but with travelling animals, it may only be a matter of time.

Please contact us for further information but also realize your input is really important since we want to increase our medical base to help animals and their owners

What is Canine Flu?

 Canine Flu

Part 1

Apparently, this is considered a new disease that has been discovered recently. The actual truth is that this canine / feline flu has been present for many years and is only now being recognized. These flu viruses have been present for many years. As a veterinarian being in practice for over 40 years, I have seen flu like signs in dogs and cats for over 40 years..

The clinical signs may vary from a digestive tract involvement causing vomiting and diarrhea to a viral respiratory infection causing slightly roughened lung sounds referred to as increasedvesicular sounds bilaterally.

The fact that the flu has not been diagnosed until now, does not mean that it not has been present.

Over the years, the flu virus that did occur, often developed in house hold pets a week later.

It has never been shown that there is a vertical transmission from people to animals. But the interesting thing that I have observed is, that

when there is an environmental change in day time and night time temperatures of more than 30 degrees, people and animals often develop the flu. Is it an environmental stress and not totally contagious?

Why then do people and animals contract the flu when they are never exposed to another subject?

Have you ever eaten a bad meal and in the morning awakened with a sore throat and a runny nose?

Where do you think this came from?

Part 2 in next post

WHAT IS AUTOIMMUNUTY?

Autoimmunity is a condition that can develop that deregulates the main immune cells which not only prevents them from protecting the body but also allows them to lose recognition of the body’s own tissue.

These deregulated B and T cells have the ability to make anti antibodies against red blood cells called autoimmune hemolytic anemia, against white blood cells called systemic lupus, against platelets needed for proper blood clotting called autoimmune thrombocytopenia plus many more.

How and why does this happen? This protective immune system turning against the body has been referred to as Plechner’s syndrome. What is this syndrome?

This syndrome occurs with the development of a cortisol deficiency or the production of defective cortisol. This leads to an elevated estrogen that not only binds the receptor sites of thyroid hormone but further binds any active cortisol and deregulates the B and T cell so that they can now function to the detriment of the patient.

In all actuality, the only true deficiency that does occur is in the B cells production of antibody. When this occurs and the level of mucous membrane antibody drops below 65 mg %, the patient has problems absorbing oral medication. This antibody is identified as IgA. Medications often fail due to this inability of the oral medication to reach the blood stream.

With any autoimmune disorder, intramuscular or IV injections, along with the use of thyroid hormones, will be more effective and maybe the only answer. Once the IgA levels have returned to normal, so proper absorbing of oral medications can take place, the use of oral medications can be used.

SIGNS OF THE IMBALANCE IN CATS

SIGNS OF THE IMBALANCE IN CATS
The first sign of this imbalance will be a chronic imbalance.

There after the following may also be signs of this imbalance.

Gingival flare which means there is a small red line on the gums where the enamel joins the gums. This represents a mucous membrane antibody deficiency that will manifest itself in 70 % of the cases. This antibody is referred to as IgA.

Allergy is next and does relate to the above. The allergy can appear in different regions of the body. What kind of allergies are we speaking about? There are skin problems, food problems, chronic organ problems with the kidneys, liver and pancreas.

Any ongoing disorder, needs to be looked at for this mechanism imbalance referred to as Plechner’s Syndrome.

Infertility, false pregnancies, idiopathic epilepsy and chronic urinary syndrome are all indications of a hormone antibody imbalance that can be identified and controlled.

ANTI-AGING For Animals

ANTI-AGING For Animals

By Alfred J. Plechner, D.V.M.

Supplements, good nutrition, and exercise are extremely important in slowing down the aging process, but no more important than are the homogeneity of the endocrine system, and its regulation of the immune cells, which hopefully will protect the body as it relates to anti-aging.

When an imbalance occurs between natural, active cortisol, and total estrogen, not only are the thyroid hormones bound, but a total, slow down of metabolism can occur. When this happens, breakdown products, toxins etc, are not decreased or properly broken down within a 24 hour period, but remain in the body, to kill vital cells needed for healthy maintenance of the body. This is where aging and not anti-aging begins.

This is one reason normal cells cannot live out their normal life for 120 days and often perish within 90 days or less. You can begin to see that there may be a 25-30% hastening of cellular death, contributing to early aging of the person and their pet. The lack of immune regulation due to hormonal imbalances, further leads to the immune cells losing recognition of “self tissue”. This is a further reason why early aging occurs, by allowing these “immune soldiers”, a better chance of attacking the person or pets tissue. This condition is often referred to as “auto-immunity”. Yes this is auto-immunity, but also leads to early aging. To determine if this is occurring or not, certain bodily fluids [hormones and antibodies] measurements need to be done.

At this time, only partial tests are being done, to measure estrogen. Total estrogen must be done. In males, usually only estradiol is measured. In females only, the three ovarian estrogens are measured. Why then, in spayed females, that have no ovaries, can the total estrogen be high? There is a mechanism imbalance which is being called Plechner’s Syndrome. Obviously, there are other sources of estrogen in the patients that are not being measured. Besides the recognized sources of estrogen, there may be large amounts of adrenal estrogen. Estrogens that come from plants are referred to as phyto-estrogens. Plastic may contain xeno-estrogens. Do you think, that switching from copper water pipes to plastic water pipes might be a significant reason why, there has been an increase in cancer, throughout our nation. There should also, be a concern, about municipal water sources that we drink, and have not been tested for estrogen yet. If antibiotics can show up in the ground water, would you think, estrogen might also be present, due to flushing an estrogen supplement, or birth control medication down the toilet.

Last but not least, why would any female patient, whether a person or a pet, take any estrogen supplement without first doing a test for total estrogen?

These all play a major roll, in the total estrogen picture. With the high estrogen binding the thyroid, the estrogenic effects, even become worse, because the slow metabolism in the liver, further reduces the breakdown of the total estrogen.

Once you have an accurate total estrogen, how do you determine what has occurred with the immune cells? The antibody production by the one immune cell (B cell) will determine if, these immune cells, now if deficient, will protect the body, or allow the cell to turn against the body.

With proper hormone supplementation, you not only normalize the hormones, but can normalize both the B and T cells. This further means, that each patient can be more exact in determining what their specific needs will be, to normalize the B cells antibody production and help with anti-aging.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of treating several large breeds: Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds, Newfoundland Retrievers, St. Bernard’s and Great Pyrenees. It has always been assumed that these large breeds die early in life, by the time they are 5 to 7 years of age. Could this be a form of early aging?

Even with proper nutrition, proper supplements and proper exercise, the 5 to 7 year time frame still exists. This is not to say, that the above is not important, but what it may say, is that we need to look elsewhere, for another reason, why their lives, are shorter. There is another reason! By measuring my hormonal-antibody mechanism [Plechner's syndrome] in a 6 month old large or giant breed, if there is an imbalance, and it is controlled, I have been able to markedly extend the lives of my patients. [Anti-aging]

It was not unusual, to have Great Danes live to 15-16 years of age, Irish Wolfhounds live to 12-14 years, Newfoundland retrievers to 15-17years and St. Bernard’s and Great Pyrenees live to 14-15 years of age.

Actually this test not only helps against early aging, but also helps prevent medical disorders that will occur if there is a mechanism imbalance. Remember this, the cause will almost always precede the effect.

Pets and People are definitely similar, if not the same, when it comes to early aging.

There may never be a “fountain of youth”, but there is a regulation of hormones and antibodies that will do the same, called Plechner’s Syndrome

Why Did I Create Dog And Cat Food ?

Dog And Cat food
When I first graduated from the veterinary school at the University of California at Davis, I became aware that many of the animals I was seeing appeared to have some sort of allergies, ranging from skin problems to bowel problems etc.

At the same time, I wondered why oral or injectable cortisones seemed to help. When I started testing my patients, I found they all had a cortisol deficiency. I Now realize that my profession was doing a replacement for the cortisol and they never realized this.

I also wanted to know, with this imbalance, which allergens were causing problems. Obviously, I would have a problem identify inhalants, but thought I could identify ingested allergens like foods.

Please realize I had just graduated and had never been taught about small animal nutrition. I did complete a course in large animal nutrition called Feeds and Feedings, but this did not help with my journey.

I asked myself, where do I begin? I looked to the Asian population with their 8000 years of eating soy, rice and vegetables. They are doing well.

I procured a hand book of the composition of nutrients from the USDA.

I began my adventure by doing a soybean, brown rice, celery and carrot recipe. I gave my recipe to the owners to make at home.

It began to look like approximately 30 % of allergies came from an improper allergic diet. I made my findings known to veterinary deaf ears, however, a board certified dermatologist in England stated that food allergies were less than 1 % of the overall allergies.

As time passed, my theory worked in spite of the opposition. All seemed well until I got a call from an irate husband telling me that his wife was standing in front of a stack of carrots that she was peeling in their kitchen. Meaning no offense he said “if you do not figure out something that is reasonable, I may have to end your career”.

I definitely took his comment personally.

What then would be the next step? What if I could find a manufacturer to make my diet commercially? That was all good and fine, but how would I preserve the food without causing patients a problem with a preservative?

How about clean water and freezing? The only interested manufacturer was Breeder’s Choice owned at that time by Hal Taylor and both his neat sons. They manufactured the food under the label of Naturally Yours.

At the time, Dr. Mark Morris Sr. called me the Holistic veterinarian of California. He is the creator of Hills and Science Diets. He looked at my formulation and suggested I add a little calcium which I did.

The diet worked too well because I received these great stories from many people including a couple of wives that said their husbands came home late from work and upon spying this partially eaten loaf, broke out the crackers and ate the rest. Remember the loaf was all human quality.

The value of my food was seen by others and I sat down one afternoon and created a full line of pet foods called Nature’s Recipe.

I was able to create the first cat food ever with 800 mgs of taurine to help stop enlarged hearts referred to as cardiomyopathy.

As the Plechner syndrome increased, due to inbreeding, soon the patients developed sensitivities to lamb and rice, chicken and rice etc.

I then created Innovative Veterinary Diets based upon a single protein and a single carbohydrate besides rice. Soon came duck and potato, venison and potato, fish and potato, and rabbit and potato.

The other pet food manufactures followed and this had the added benefit of helping to rid diets of BHA, BHT and ethoxiquin.

I will soon, once again, be involved with the creation of diets that will be a huge benefit and not add to the misery of Plechner’s Syndrome.

Estrogen containing food may lead to the downfall of our pets, and there is no reason for this to occur. Hopefully, the Healthy Pet Network will find a pet food manufacturer that can see the promise for the future of pet foods and will become involved.
